Be present this week.
Hey everyone, I apologize for not writing more often, but a lot has been going on for me recently. Work is going great, traveling on and off for work, and trying to keep up with CrossFit. Also, we are getting some furniture soon, and I'll setup my office so I can get more consistent on this. I do miss writing and babbling about life, technology, and of course CrossFit now. I haven't been in a week and it is eating at me. I have done some squats, and pushups, but it doesn't have the same vibe as being at the box. Anyway, I have been doing more and more WordPress development and as always, the more you do something the better you get at it. I have pulled back from attending meetups recently, not for any other reason other than time. I will be back at the Node.JS meetup starting in July. I pretty much have put goals on hold for now... well, as you can see that isn't true... goals are goals, and they should always be on your mind. I don't always go to CrossFit but I ALWAYS check out the WOD. I don't always write code but I always am reading about new technologies. So here is what I have realized... my plans RARELY work out. Long term, God's plan works out MUCH better. I should spend more time being HERE, than worrying about why I'm not THERE. I have A LOT going on in my life right now, but that doesn't mean I should dilute my life with distractions. I should focus 100% on what I am doing at that moment. When I write, I write with intent. When I code, I code with purpose. When I workout, I pray I survive and only worry about finishing. I don't think of code during CrossFit. I don't think of CrossFit when I code. I do my best to be 100% present when I am doing anything. I did not say I do that perfectly, I said I do my best. The key to that is I don't beat myself up when I fail at that goal. I continually learn more and more about life. Life is not about collecting THINGS, it is not about achieving a STATUS, it is not even about EXPERIENCING the world. It comes down to one thing that all of those are side effects of, it comes down to relationships. Interacting with another human being face to face. Shaking hands, listening about their life and sharing yours. We crave that more than we realize. We think a new car, a diploma, a better job, a bigger family, a better body, etc... will make us happy, but if we connect with a person everyday, and not just say hello, but isolate ourselves from our electronic leashes, and listen to the person that is in front of us, we will have a good day. So my challenge to you is this. once this week, turn off the tv, turn OFF your phone, and make time for one other person. It doesn't need to be a 3 hour conversation, but I would suggest give them an undivided hour of your time, if it goes longer, that is fine, don't check the time... but be present for them. At the end of the week, review the days you made that time, and remember the days you didn't. How did you feel? Are you really present, or are you anxious about the next thing you need to do?
